Chattanooga, Tenn., firefighter honored for rescue

A Chattanooga firefighter was selected as the state's firefighter of 2006 for rescuing a woman from her burning home in April.

The Tennessee Firemen's Association chose Lt. Terrance Andrews of the Chattanooga Fire Department.

The lieutenant pulled the security bars away from a window to pull a 46-year-old woman to safety after a blaze turned her 1600 Parkway Drive into an inferno April 20, said Bruce Garner, spokesman for the department.

The fire victim was treated for injuries at Erlanger hospital and released in May, Mr. Garner said.

Lt. Andrews has been a Chattanooga firefighter for eight years and is assigned to Station 15. He will accept his award Saturday at the association's annual convention in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

"I know that Lieutenant Andrews is one of many in this department who demonstrates an unselfishness and willingness to collectively perform at heroic levels literally on a daily basis to protect our citizens," Fire Chief Wendell Rowe said in a news release.

Chattanooga Mayor Ron Littlefield called Lt. Andrews a "true hero" and said in a news release his actions underscore the dangers of the job and the life-saving skills that he and his co-workers possess.
