WASHINGTON — Six New Jersey fire departments and a safety squad were awarded more than $2 million in federal grants for training, equipment and vehicles.

U.S. senators Frank Lautenberg and Robert Menendez, both New Jersey Democrats, along with Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-8th Dist.), announced the funding yesterday.

"While states and municipalities are making tough budget decisions, this direct federal investment in local emergency response is especially important to the safety of our communities," Lautenberg said in a statement.
