WALLINGTON, N.J. — The federal government has awarded a $172,283 grant to the Wallington Fire Department to pay for breathing equipment, Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr. said Friday.

The grant, made under a 1999 law that Pascrell wrote and introduced, is slated to pay for 31 self-contained breathing apparatuses, which typically are replaced every 10 years, officials said. The money is administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The Firefighter Investment Response Enhancement Act, known as the FIRE Act, was designed to help fire departments purchase equipment that they otherwise might not be able to afford, and to help provide additional money for staffing, Pascrell, D-Paterson, said in a statement. Money for equipment is awarded in Assistance to Firefighters Grants, he said.
