Pa. dept. lands $140,000 grant

BROWNSVILLE, Pa. — The Brownsville No. 1 Volunteer Fire Department (North Side) has landed a $140,315 grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

The money will be used for 30 new sets of turnout gear for active firefighters.

"Our equipment is old and outdated. We are very appreciative to Congressman Bill Shuster and his staff who made it possible for us to receive this grant. This money will be a big help and allow us to put proper equipment on our firemen and keep them safe," said fire Chief Clark Sealy.

The new gear will include fire resistant boots, helmets, Nomex hoods, pants and coats. The department will also purchase all new self-breathing apparatus units for the firefighters.

"This is long overdue for the first-responders at Brownsville Fire Company No. 1 and the people they serve and protect every day," said U.S. Rep. Bill Shuster, R-Hollidaysburg.

The purpose of the federal Assistance to Firefighter Grant program is to meet firefighting and emergency response needs. It has been in place since 2001.
