Ohio fire unit to buy equipment with federal grant

OHIO — A Greene County fire department will receive more than $50,000 from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

The homeland security department's Fiscal Year 2005 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program will distribute $600 million to fire departments across the country this year. Friday was the program's fifteenth round, in which it gave $15.4 million to fire groups nationwide.

The New Jasper Township Fire Department near Xenia received $54,578 through the program. Assistant Chief Doug McDaniel said the department will use the money to buy air packs to help firefighters breathe while fighting fires. They're looking to purchase 12 packs, 24 face masks to specially fit each fighter and 12 spare air bottles for the packs.
