ROANOKE, Va. — The Roanoke Fire-EMS Department has received a $5,000 grant to purchase a high-tech thermal imaging camera.

The grant from Wells Fargo Insurance and Fireman's Fund Insurance Co. was presented during a 9/11 memorial that honored the 343 firefighters who died while evacuating people from the World Trade Center. Thermal imaging cameras allow firefighters to "see" through smoke, darkness and other low-visibility conditions.

The cameras help firefighters quickly locate victims trapped in burning buildings and fine hot spots inside walls. Additionally, the cameras have been used to locate accident victims who may have been thrown from motor vehicles.
