Texas EMS gets 800 radios when grant funding doubles

LIBERTY, Texas — Commissioners quickly approved a $176,488 purchase for 700/800 MHZ radios through an agreement between the office of emergency management and SETRAC (Southeast Texas Regional Advisory Council) during the first Commissioners Court meeting of the new year, Jan. 14, 2014. The new communications equipment will be used by both Liberty County EMS and Liberty County’s OEM.

The grant was written as non-matching money, original at $88,000 and some change. Doubled to $176,488, the grant will go much further now, including EMS and first responder agencies. These radios talk a lot farther and communicate with EMS and hospitals.

Misti Worrell of SETRAC told the commissioners and County Judge Craig McNair, “We have not worked as closely with EMS and Emergency Management as we would like to, but that is our push for 2014. I want to really thank Mike Koen (President of Liberty County Emergency Management Service) for setting the stage for this. No one has ever proposed something like this for a region. He had originally proposed that it go to Liberty County EMS.”
