Cincy fire department gets $8M grant to end brownouts

It's the last piece of the puzzle to stop the brownouts; the money will add 50 firefighters and pay their salaries for two years

CINCINNATI —The Cincinnati Fire Department is getting an $8 million grant to help add firefighters and end brownouts.

Sen. Sherrod Brown announced Thursday that the CFD had been awarded resources for staffing by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency Assistance to Firefighters Grants and the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Program.

“I’m just thrilled. It’s the last piece we consider, the last piece of our puzzle to stop the brownouts,” Cincinnati Fire Chief Richard Braun said. The money will be used to add 50 firefighters and pay their salaries for two years. The grant will put the recruits in class by May and they could be on the job as early as November.
