Mich. fire department awarded FEMA grant

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — New exhaust handling equipment and a filling station for air bottles for the Battle Creek Fire Department paid with a federal grant should be installed by the end of the summer.

The department received $74,648 from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grand Program. The grant is provided through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and was announced last week by Michigan U.S. Senators Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow. The grant requires a 20 percent match and will cost Battle Creek about $15,000, according to Battalion Chief Howard Holt.

Some of the money will be used for a new exhaust handling system for fire engines and trucks at six Battle Creek stations.
