Detroit receives $1.2M grant for Fire-EMS training, equipment

DETROIT — The city’s Fire Department is receiving a $1.2 million federal grant to improve its safety and operations, officials announced Thursday.

Detroit’s department is among three in southeast Michigan being awarded funds through the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Senators Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow said Wednesday in a statement. Ann Arbor Charter Township Fire Department will get $89,186 and $24,206 will go to Armada Township’s Fire Department in Macomb County, they said.

“Communities everywhere turn to their fire departments for emergencies large and small,” Levin said. “These grants will help provide needed assistance to the firefighters and EMTs of Ann Arbor, Armada and Detroit who stand ready every day to put their lives on the line for their communities.” The awards can be used for professional training, wellness and fitness programs and equipment, protective gear for firefighters, facility improvements and supplies that support firefighting and emergency mecical service operations.
