CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The Chapel Hill Fire Department will hire 12 firefighters with more than $1.2 million from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response program. The grant is part of a larger initiative by the Town Council to improve fire safety by hiring more staff.

This is the third year that Chapel Hill has applied for the competitive grant and the first time it received funding. Advocates for the grant award include U.S. Sens. Richard Burr and Elizabeth Dole, and U.S. Rep. David Price.
