BRIDGETON, N.J. — Fire Prevention Week began Saturday, and N.C. Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin kicked it off here personally last week by presenting Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Department a $30,000 check for firefighting gear.

"This is a great day," Goodwin said Thursday as he delivered the check to Fire Chief John Harrell. "In these times we don't get much good news. This is historic…the first time Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Department applied for this grant. I'm tickled to death to be here."

The department has a main station on St. Delight's Church Road and branches in Bridgeton and on Broad Creek Road near Fairfield Harbour.
