Fireman's Fund Heritage Program

Grant Details:
Amount: Varies
Application Due Date: TBA

Description:

Application Deadline:

Extended to Monday, May 2, 2011

Overview:

Fireman's Fund Insurance Company began in 1863, in San Francisco, and our name reflects our colorful beginnings.

We were named for an arrangement in which we paid 10 percent of our profits to widows and orphans of firefighters - a social mission that we continue today, through our Fireman's Fund Heritage® program, provides millions of dollars in grants for equipment, training and educational programs to fire departments across the country. Our history illustrates our company values--innovative, dependable, and courageous.

Funding:

Firefighting equipment. Life-saving training. Critical programs. Fireman's Fund awards grants to fire departments of all sizes across the country.

We focus on providing funds for needed equipment, firefighter training, and community education programs.

Selection Process:

Fireman's Fund employees can nominate fire departments in their communities for grants as part of our Bucket Brigade program. To qualify, employees first take a training course to learn about the needs of the fire service and the Fireman's Fund Heritage program. A rotating committee of employees evaluates the nominations quarterly and decides which departments will receive grants.

During 2004 and 2005, we selected the San Diego, Atlanta, San Francisco and Chicago metropolitan areas to receive a concentration of company grants. Today, every community where we do business can participate in Heritage through agent-directed grants and employee nominations.

Although we cannot award a grant to every department with a funding need, we try to connect our agents and employees to departments that could use our assistance. We also collect fire department stories to help raise awareness for the issue of dwindling resources in the fire service. We encourage fire departments to take our brief survey and share your story with us.

Grants Awarded:

As of December 2010, the Fireman's Fund Heritage Program has awarded more than $27 million in grants to these fire departments and groups (pdf).
