AFG Assistance to Firefighters Grants
AFG 2016 Funding : $310.5 Million anticipated
Purpose: Protect the public and fire service personnel from fire and all other hazards.
The Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) provides financial assistance directly to fire departments, nonaffiliated EMS organizations and State Fire Training Academies to enhance response capabilities to fire and fire-related hazards. The primary goal is to provide organizations with training and equipment to meet firefighting and related response needs. AFG supports organizations that lack the tools and resources necessary to effectively protect the public and emergency personnel during fire-related incidents.
While needs may be local, projects funded by the AFG program should enhance regional and national response capabilities. Successful requests will enhance personell safety, foster interoperability, improve operational efficiency and support community resiliency.
AFG funding priorities are determined based on the type of organization requesting funds. Please read the Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) document with this in mind and make sure that you are referencing the appropriate sections for your organization type.
1. Fire Department Priorities
2. Nonaffiliated EMS Organization Priorities
3. State Fire Training Academies Priorities
*Under the Fire Department and Nonaffiliated EMS applications, special consideration will be given to Operations & Safety applications requesting less than $25,000 federal share. These are considered Microgrant requests and are focused on essential training, equipment and PPE needs.
Cost sharing requirements under the FY2016 AFG Program will be announced when guidance is published. Historically, it has been based on the population protected by the grantee. The cost-share breakdown for FY15 was as follows:
