13 firefighters hired under grant issued layoff notices

SAGINAW, Mich. — In June 2013, 15 Saginaw firefighters were set to be laid off when the city's fiscal year ended on June 30.

Just 10 days before that happened, though, federal lawmakers announced the city would receive a $2.3 million, two-year grant that would prevent the layoffs.

Almost two years later, the term of the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant nears its end and Saginaw city leaders are faced with a fiscal reality similar to the one they faced in 2013.
