$1.75 million grant aids Mich. radio communication

New equipment for Kent County essentially will allow for updating dispatching center consoles

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — In early 2008, when fire ravaged the 100-unit Indian Village Condominiums, Grand Rapids firefighters could have used a cohesive communication system to help them coordinate radio traffic with the numerous responding agencies.

Soon, all Kent Count police, fire and ambulance responders will have that capability.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has awarded area authorities a $1.75 million grant to buy equipment and software to foster seamless communication between area police and fire agencies.
