Cal Fire awards $250K in fire prevention grants

Cal Fire selected CSU Monterey Bay and Big Sur Fire for local fire prevention grants


MONTEREY — As forecasters predict another busy fire season for California later this year, Cal Fire selected CSU Monterey Bay and Big Sur Fire for local fire prevention grants.

The University Corporation at Monterey Bay, a nonprofit organization that is a fully integrated part of CSUMB, will receive $227,591 for the advancement of fire prevention planning and mapping for San Benito and Monterey counties. Big Sur Fire will receive $55,000 for its wildfire pre-attack plan.

John Olson, the assistant professor at CSUMB behind the grant, said part of the grant is designed to provide CSUMB students with internships working for Cal Fire doing landscape analysis.
