City approves FEMA grant to hire 33 new firefightres

Under the grant, the county would commit to keeping the firefighters who are hired and trained under the grant on staff throughout the two-year grant period

Florida Today

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — County commissioners tonight gave Brevard County Fire-Rescue Chief Larry Collins permission to accept a $3.69 million federal grant. The grant would pay for the salaries and benefits of 33 new firefighters/emergency medical technicians for two years.

But commissioners told Collins not to spend any of the grant money until he gave them a presentation adequately satisfying concerns they had about the fire department budget and staffing.

The commission vote was 4-1, with Commissioner Trudie Infantini voting against accepting the grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
