City gets $3M grant to avoid 84 firefighter layoffs

The city is awaiting news on a two-year extension that would kick in after this one runs out

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — Atlantic City firefighters set to be laid off Friday will keep their jobs for at least 2 and a half more months, thanks to a $3.2 million federal grant.

The Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grant was paying the salaries and benefits of 50 firefighters, but the city planned to lay off them and 35 others to help close a huge budget deficit.

But on Wednesday, the city was notified it received approval to expand the grant, which will pay for 84 firefighters. Another has retired, acting Fire Chief Vincent Granese said.
