Fla. fire department gets grant for rescue equipment

Fire Chief Joe Jenkins said most of the money is going toward new extrication tools that will reduce the amount of time it takes firefighters to rescue crash victims trapped in cars

LAKE WALES, Fla. — The Lake Wales Fire Department has received a $10,000 grant for new equipment and upgrades.

Fire Chief Joe Jenkins said most of the money is going toward new extrication tools that will reduce the amount of time it takes firefighters to rescue crash victims trapped in cars. There is a public demonstration of the new equipment at 10 a.m. today behind the department at 253 W. Central Ave.

"Going from a dual-hose system to hook tools up for a vehicle accident to a single core hose eliminates half the time," Jenkins said. "It's just a lot quicker and a more efficient system." A portion of the grant money will also be spent on special, hard suction hoses used to fight fires when no hydrant is available and water must be pumped from a 1,500-gallon tank.
