Grant to boost new fire station staffing in Ohio

FLORENCE, Ohio — The city of Florence will get some assistance to pay for the initial staffing of its new fire station, if it agrees to hire the six new firefighters recommended in a study.

City Council voted to approve a $1 million International Association of Firefighters Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant at its Dec. 17 meeting.

The grant is anticipated to cover all salary and benefits of six firefighters for two years at the station just off Houston Road on Ted Bushelman Boulevard, which will open next year. The city would absorb the costs at the end of the grant period. The initial findings of a personnel needs study conducted by Management Partners Inc. recommended the city should hire six additional emergency responders when the new fire station is operational.
