Ill. EMS receives grant for carbon monoxide tester

The nearly $5K grant funded the purchase of a RAD 57 machine used that will be used to test carbon monoxide levels of patients who may have been exposed, and firefighters who may have inhaled too much smoke

OAKWOOD, Ill. — Village trustees learned Monday night the Oakwood Emergency Medical Service has received a $4,838 grant from the John P. Cadle Foundation for the purchase of a RAD 57 machine. The machine is used to test carbon monoxide levels in patients who might have been exposed to high levels of carbon monoxide.

EMS chief Terry Hume said the machine also can be used to check firefighters who might have inhaled too much smoke when fighting a fire.

According to Hume, the machine is able to detect the carbon monoxide level in a person be attaching a clip to the person's finger.
