Ind. EMS agency awarded AED from nonprofit

NAPPANEE, Ind. — A new piece of life-saving equipment has been awarded to the Nappanee Emergency Medical Services Department, the Board of Public Works and Safety learned Monday evening. An automated external defibrillator was given to the department by HeartReach Michiana, an Elkhart organization formed in 2004 to serve those in the Michiana area affected by heart disease.

Nappanee EMS Chief Jim Sumpter Jr. told the board that he recently learned his department received the grant in the form of the AED, and that paramedic Sandy Witt was instrumental in securing the grant for the department. The AED is used to restore normal heart rhythm to patients in cardiac arrest. HeartReach Michiana has donated 495 AEDs to date.

Don Lehman reported that another quote was just received for the rehabilitation work needed on the train depot. Indiana Landmark prepared specifications for the work that needs to be done on the city’s historic landmark, which includes exterior painting. Lehman said the specifications were handed out to three contractors and two were close in numbers and one was “way off.”
