FITCHBURG, Mass. — The Fitchburg Fire Department received $24,300 in federal grant money for safety equipment and protective gear, Sens. Scott Brown and John Kerry announced Monday.

The grant is part of nearly $2 million being awarded to 12 communities across Massachusetts, according to a press release from Kerry's office.

The funding, awarded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Assistance to Firefighters Grants and the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grants, will improve staffing, training and equipment, according to the release.

Also last month, Fire Chief Kevin Roy, announced that the department received a $6,515 grant for fire safety education and $2,000 to maintain the regional "fire safe house," which teaches children how to react in a fire. The department in November received $4,000 in a Homeland Security grant.
