Mass. to rehire 5 firefighters with grant

Plymouth will get $627,190 that officials plan to use to restore the jobs of firefighters laid off last July

PLYMOUTH, Mass. — Plymouth is expected to rehire five firefighters with a federal grant of more than $600,000, U.S. Rep. William Delahunt's office announced Wednesday.

Town officials, working with the fire department, applied for the funding. Plymouth will get $627,190 that officials intend to use to rehire firefighters who lost their jobs last July amid budget cutting.

"The loss of these positions in this year's budget made it difficult for the department to staff all seven fire stations on a shift-by-shift basis," Plymouth Fire Chief Edward Bradley said in a statement.

"This grant will ensure the department has the staffing required to provide adequate fire-protection, hazardous-materials and emergency-medical response to the residents and visitors to Plymouth, and with no cost to the taxpayers."
