Md. fire and EMS agencies get $575K grant for new radios

FREDERICK, Md. — The Frederick County Division of Fire and Rescue Services received roughly $500,000 in federal funding to purchase radios, allowing for better collaboration between counties, Maryland leaders announced July 15.

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, which falls under the Federal Emergency Management Agency, awarded the Frederick County division $575,000 of the $304.5 million that will be awarded to other first-responder organizations across the nation for fiscal 2014, the release states.

“We are very appreciative of the grant,” said Chip Jewell, chief of the county’s volunteer companies, noting that the county had hoped for more funds to buy all the radios needed.
