MEMPHIS —The Memphis Fire Department received a $5,000 grant from Georgia-Pacific that will help the department buy safety boots for the department's special operations team, officials said Tuesday.

“Our Special Operations team responds to all structure fires, hazardous materials incidents, and technical rescue incidents within the City of Memphis,” said Director of Fire Services Gina Sweat in a statement. “The boots that this donation will help us purchase will help reduce the risk of crush injury and have slip resistant soles that increases the level of safety while operating in wet and dangerous conditions.”

Memphis Fire received the grant through Georgia-Pacific's Bucket Brigade program. The program in its 10th year has provided more than 300 grants totaling $2 million to fire departments across the country.

This year, Georgia-Pacific awarded $170,000 in grants to fire departments for equipment critical to firefighters’ safety.
