Michigan fire department lands $55K grant

GRAND HAVEN TOWNSHIP, Mich. — The Grand Haven Township Fire Department will receive a $55,100 federal grant in the upcoming months to help it purchase two monitor heart defibrillators that will ultimately improve the diagnosis of cardiac arrest patients.

The two U.S. senators from Michigan, Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow, announced Thursday that the township was among eight Michigan fire departments that would receive $1.3 million in federal funds to cover costs to make major improvements as part of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

The department applied for the grant in summer 2012 and had been brainstorming a way to obtain money to purchase the equipment, said Tom Gerencer, the township's fire and rescue chief.
