NJ city approves plan to lay off 64 firefighters to plug $5.3M budget hole

The city said it needs to make up an anticipated increase in the 2018 budget caused by the firefighters who are being paid for by a SAFER grant

TRENTON, N.J. — City officials approved a plan to lay off 64 firefighters that are being paid by a federal grant that ends in October.

NJ.com reported that the city’s plan says it needed to make up an anticipated budget increase of $5.3 million caused by the 64 firefighters who have been paid by a SAFER grant that started in Jan. 2015. The plan also says that economic conditions have not improved and state aid will be less in 2018.

Closing down fire companies is also “on the table,” according to the city.

The city will soon start official notifications and the layoffs will take place Nov. 1.
