Long Island, N.Y. — New York State has approved 14 grants of roughly $100,000 each to study and seek to develop microgrids or separate networks of power on Long Island that would continue operating in case of extreme weather and other emergencies.

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority approved the grants among 83 statewide out of 130 applications for initial funding to study the feasibility of projects.

The agency described microgrids as local energy networks that can separate from the larger electric grid during extreme weather events or emergencies and provide power to the grid when needed.
