WASHINGTON — The Fayetteville Fire Department has been awarded a competitive grant of $75,291 from the federal government to help upgrade the village's fire hydrants, U.S. Rep. Dan Maffei said today.

The grant from a firefighter assistance program run by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will be used to update and standardize fire hydrant threads throughout the village's fire district, Maffei's office said.

The department also will use the money to pay for improvements to fire hydrant visibility, especially in the winter.
