LARCHMONT, N.Y. — Three new firefighters will join the village Fire Department next week, thanks to a federal grant that will pay for their salary and benefits for two years.

The $519,774 grant will be administered through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response program. Rep. Eliot Engel, D-Bronx, announced the grant Thursday.

Larchmont is the only municipality in Westchester, Putnam and Rockland counties to receive the grant for the award year 2012. The grant was created to provide funding directly to fire departments and volunteer firefighter interest organizations to help them increase the number of trained firefighters available in their communities, the Federal Emergency Management Agency said.
