Pa. fire department receives $176K grant

UPPER GWYNEDD, Pa. — On March 21, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) awarded the Upper Gwynedd Township Fire Department a Staffing for Adequate Fire & Emergency Response (SAFER) grant in the amount of $176,800 that’s specifically earmarked for the recruitment and retention of volunteer firefighters.

The grant has enabled UGTFD to institute a reimbursement/stipend program, which started on April 1 and reimburses members who staff the firehouse at 660 Garfield Avenue between the hours of 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. every day.

“This program is a well-thought-out effort to provide overnight fire protection to the residences and businesses of Upper Gwynedd Township and to aid in surrounding municipalities who aim to maintain the same objective,” said Upper Gwynedd Fire Chief Chris Sharkey.
