SAFER grant application period now open

The application period is open through March 25; $340 million in grants are available

WASHINGTON — The Federal Emergency Management Agency is now accepting Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grant applications.

The application period will end March 25 at 5 p.m. ET.

The grant program was established to assist fire departments with staffing by providing funding for hiring new firefighters and recruitment and retention programs for volunteer firefighters.

"Too often our municipalities must balance limited budgets with their substantial needs. At times, critical emergency services in our communities could be on the chopping block," said Rep. Frank LoBiondo (R-N.J.).

Congress has appropriated $340 million to fund this cycle.
