Tenn. fire chief seeks new turnout gear, fire truck

Chief Kevin Peters said their current turnout gear is 13 years old, while the average life span is eight years

MONTEREY, Tenn. — When blazes get hot in Monterey, a team of volunteer firefighters is always at the ready.

But new equipment would be helpful — things like turnout gear and another fire truck — which Chief Kevin Peters told finance committee members all about during last night’s budget preparation meeting.

It was a tall order of requests, but an important one, he emphasized. And turnout gear, which is the protective outer clothing his volunteers wear when battling blazes, is at the top of the list. “The turnout gear is the main thing,” he said. “That protects those guys.” Peters pointed out that the crew’s current turnout gear — which includes such items as boots, pants, coats, gloves and helmets — is 13 years old, while the average life span is eight years.
