Volunteer fire dept. gets new ambulance after wreck

CANA, Va. — A volunteer fire department in Virginia received a new ambulance to replace one that was totaled in a collision last year.

WDBJ7.com reported the new ambulance has special lifts for heavy oxygen tanks and upgraded reflectors on the back.

"I would have never dreamed in years that we would have had something as nice as this," said Capt. Jason Busick, with the Cana Volunteer Rescue Squad.

The collision occurred last year when crews were on their way back from the hospital. The ambulance was struck and flipped over. No one was seriously injured in the collision, but the ambulance was totaled.

The department received a grant from the Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services that helped cover the price. The department only had to come up with about $1,000 to pay for new radios.

"There's no way we would have been able to do enough yard sales, bean suppers and stuff like that to have ever paid for something like this," Capt. Busick said.

The new ambulance will be put into service once the Virginia Office of EMS approves it.
