WEST STOCKHOLM, N.Y. — U.S. Sens. Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten E. Gillibrand announced $40,375 in federal funding for the West Stockholm Fire Department on Thursday. The money was allocated through the Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

“These federal funds will provide the assistance that West Stockholm Fire Department needs to replace critical life-saving equipment. Firefighters are the first people on the scene of a car accident, and it’s crucial that we provide them with the equipment they need to do their jobs to the best of their ability,” Sen. Schumer said in a release.

The West Stockholm Fire Department has been serving St. Lawrence County residents since 1926. The department will use the federal funding to purchase five pieces of rescue equipment called “Jaws of Life,” which are used to extract trapped individuals from motor vehicles and include cutters, rams and spreaders.
