FDNY receives grant for female firefighter training

$11K will go toward preparing the women for the Fire Academy

The FDNY Foundation has received an $11K grant to support the United Women Firefighters (UWF) Physical Training Program for Female Firefighter Candidates.

“The FDNY is committed to increasing the diversity of our Firefighter ranks by attracting more women to join the Department,” said Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro. “This grant will help the Department achieve that goal by helping female candidates become better prepared for the physical demands of the Fire Academy.”

The UWF Female Candidate Physical Training Program will hold weekly sessions where participants will receive training and support from active female Firefighters as well as professional trainers affiliated with New York Sports Club.  The weekly training will focus on tasks and exercises candidates can expect to encounter at the Fire Academy including hauling fire hoses, dragging mannequins, and using a stair master while wearing a weighted vest.

Taylor & Taylor Associates partnered with the Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company to award the grant.

Since December 2006, Fireman’s Fund has awarded the FDNY Foundation over $725,000. This is the eighth grant by Taylor & Taylor, bringing their total donations to over $197,000.  Previous grants from Taylor & Taylor have provided funding for the FDNY High School for Fire and Life Safety, the Mobile CPR Training Unit, and FDNY Training Academy on Randall’s Island.
