Tenn. city receives grant to renovate fire, ambulance station

New sleeping and training facilities are planned as part of remodel

CRAB ORCHARD, Tenn. — Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam recently approved more than $28 million in Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) to assist Tennessee communities with infrastructure, health and safety projects, and downtown improvements. The city of Crab Orchard received $267,000 in grant funds to renovate the fire and ambulance station.

This grant was submitted by the city of Crab Orchard with Cumberland County providing the matching funds to the grant. With the grant, the city of Crab Orchard is proposing to upgrade and improve the existing fire station to better serve the Volunteer Fire Department and the Emergency Management Services personnel. In order to make the existing buildings more suitable for use, and to help bring the facilities up to current standards, the following improvements are required: installation of new roof on each building; installation of new bathrooms with showers for personnel; installation of new sleeping rooms and living quarters for EMS personnel; installation of new meeting and training facilities for both Fire/EMS personnel; and construction of a covered breezeway to connect the two existing buildings.

Crab Orchard Mayor Emmett Sherrill stated, “I am pleased to see these grant dollars be awarded to the city of Crab Orchard. Of course this project would not be possible without the support and matching funds from County Mayor Kenneth Carey Jr. and the Cumberland County Commission. This community livability project protects homes and businesses in Crab Orchard and the surrounding area, but also creates better living conditions for the families that reside here.”
