LANCASTER, Pa. — The Lancaster Bureau of Fire has received an $873,716 federal grant that will pay for five firefighters' salaries and benefits for two years. It's the largest grant by far that the department has received, Chief Tim Gregg said Wednesday.

"The last 10 years, we've really been going after grants, with kind of limited success. Frankly, the grant money was really hard to come by for a while," Gregg said.

This is the first time the department has received the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response, or SAFER, grant, though Gregg said the department has applied for it previously.
